Superintendent Lewis Carter has made a concerted effort to recognize the winner in everyone he meets in the Monroe County school district. From the classroom to the ball field, he can often be seen celebrating students’ and staff’s accomplishments be it a last-second buzzer beater or a preschool student who has mastered tying his shoe. Superintendent Carter finds the winner in everyone and because of his leadership, Monroe County is building a tradition of winners.
Monroe County High School has been designated a Distinguished school at the state level scoring in the 94th percentile as well as being a high-ranking school in college- and career-readiness. Monroe County Middle School has been designated as a School to Watch and has seen a 12 percent increase in scores across the board which resulted in a 45 percent gain. Gamaliel Elementary School is a National Blue Ribbon School, an NCEA/ACT Higher Performing School and a Kentucky Department of Education Winners Circle Honor School. Tompkinsville Elementary School is a 2013 Distinguished, high-performing, high progress school, ranking in the top 10 percent in academic achievement and growth in the state.
During Carter’s tenure, the number of dropouts has fallen from 20 per year to zero each year in the past three years. All schools have a Response to Intervention program addressing individual student needs. The district also has been recognized for energy conservation efforts implemented across the county. The district’s alternative learning center, the Falcon Academy, was acknowledged as a Best Practice Site in the state for alternative schools.
Monroe County and Superintendent Carter believes that everyone has a winner inside and it is his and the district’s mission to ensure that everyone finds the winner within them.
