Kentucky Commissioner of Education Robbie Fletcher

I know many of you are paying close attention to decisions made by the Trump Administration regarding education, including the recent executive order aimed at closing the U.S. Department of Education (USED).

The move to close USED, which Secretary Linda McMahon admits is ultimately subject to congressional action, will obviously mean a lot for our school districts in Kentucky that received $546 million in federal grants this school year. We at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) want to emphasize the role we play supporting our public school districts and providing quality service to help you navigate any number of challenges you may face, including anything that arises from changes at the federal level.

While KDE will need to adapt to handle these changes at USED, it will not change our course. We are committed to the United We Learn vision for Kentucky’s public schools: providing vibrant learning experiences for our students, encouraging innovation – especially around assessment and accountability – and collaborating with our communities. The United We Learn vision is how we all can help Kentucky’s students reach their full potential through high-quality learning experiences that are tailored to their needs.

The quality services we provide districts in this mission will continue as well.

Our support includes a variety of resources for districts to help with special needs students, those who truly need all the resources we can provide. Our service to districts includes a large cache of resources to increase access to grade-level learning for all Kentucky students. These statewide supports also include guidance documents, model frameworks and professional learning opportunities for several crucial areas of education, including literacy and mathematics.

I along with everyone here at KDE want to assure you our commitment to Kentucky’s public schools, its educators and its students will remain as focused as ever. Together, we will ensure our Commonwealth’s children thrive.
