On a high note
What an exciting opportunity for the Franklin County High School marching band.

A lucky day for me is when I visit a school on assignment for Kentucky Teacher and also visit a nearby district. Often this is the case when a county has an independent school district. In January I had the pleasure of visiting R.E. Stevenson Elementary School in Russellville Independent.
Once again I was able to visit an independent district and a county district on the same day. This time it was Pineville Independent in Bell County. The students and staff were friendly and focused on learning during my short visit.
By Amy Wallot amy.wallot@education.ky.gov When I was in school you weren’t allowed to have a pager, or beeper as we called it, with you in class. Then you couldn’t have a cell phone. Now some schools are encouraging students to bring their phones as part of bring-your-own-device programs. Devin wasn’t breaking any rules here. He was checking his phone after [...]
This was the first time I visited a class studying history from my lifetime. It was weird, and it was sad. I was almost in tears by the time the class ended. The students were listening with interest, but 9/11 has always been a part of their lives. It wasn’t always a part of mine.

Calloway County High School freshman Logan Palmer plays the banjo while Calloway County High senior Jacob Reynolds, George Rogers Clark [...]

It was very hot this day, so I headed to a rope swing I know of in Franklin County. Luckily, a family from Owen County was there cooling off. They were having a great time and didn’t mind me taking some pictures. [...]
By Amy Wallot amy.wallot@education.ky.gov I headed to Northern Kentucky to check out another outdoor graduation ceremony. I got there early to scope it out, and it looked beautiful. A stage and chairs were set up on the football field to accommodate the small graduating class and its guests. But before the ceremony even started the sun turned into rain, and [...]
Shooting an outdoor graduation ceremony is great. The color and light are wonderful compared to a gymnasium or auditorium. There is something so beautiful, so Americana about it. If your high school has an outdoor graduation ceremony, please let me know.
By Amy Wallot amy.wallot@education.ky.gov That’s me, Amy Wallot. I’m the photographer for Kentucky Department of Education and Kentucky Teacher. Without a doubt, I have the coolest job in the department. I travel the state bringing you the images of education from Fulton County to Pike County and everywhere in between…and sometimes I get to go to the zoo. This blog [...]
