The Kentucky Historical Society has created a learning experience for K-2 to promote a nationwide initiative called Two Lights for Tomorrow. This initiative will commemorate the celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States.

It will honor the legacy of Paul Revere’s famous overnight ride from April 18-19, 1775, and similarly Jack Jouette’s 40-mile trip to prevent British troops from seizing Thomas Jefferson. The imagery of a shining light will be used as a sign to bring citizens together for a time of celebration and service.

This learning experience embraces the theme of riding for service and highlights historical figures who utilized horses to help impact Kentucky communities. Students will also learn about the Packhorse Librarians of Eastern Kentucky.

As part of the experience, students will brainstorm and execute a service project with their school or community.

Ten educators who share their students’ experiences on social media will be randomly selected to receive a Kentucky-themed read-aloud book for their classroom libraries.

More information about the event can be found on the Kentucky Historical Society Two Lights for Tomorrow website. Any questions can be directed toward Elsie Merlie
