One of the most important components of our job as social studies educators is to ensure that our students are prepared to engage with the issues of the day through the knowledge and tools that we provide them.
As stated in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies, the goal of social studies education is for children to “develop thinking and decision-making skills that prepare them for responsible citizenship in a democratic society.” Hearing from and learning about diverse groups in the Americas is critical to reaching this goal.

In 2018, I had the good fortune of hearing a young man named Jemar Lee speak at the annual symposium of what is now called the Aurora Institute.
