This year’s theme, “Clue In to School Breakfast,” encourages students, parents and educators to uncover the clues that lead to a nutritious breakfast each day.

In 1975, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) established the School Breakfast Program as a permanent initiative to ensure students nationwide have access to a nutritious breakfast. Fast forward to 2025, and students across Kentucky start their day with a healthy breakfast at school. Research consistently shows the positive impact of breakfast on students’ well-being. During the 2023-2024 school year, Kentucky sponsors of the School Breakfast Program served more than 49 million breakfasts to more than 678,000 students. The Food Research and Action Center reports that Kentucky has seen a rise in student breakfast participation, largely due to the Community Eligibility Program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to students.

This week, join KDE in celebrating the significance of the School Breakfast Program in Kentucky. We honor the participating schools, the dedicated teachers and administrators and the child nutrition professionals who make it all possible. We also thank those who play a vital role in administering the School Breakfast Program and the countless benefits it offers to our students every school day.

Some key highlights of NSBW 2025 include:

  • Detective-themed Activities: Schools across the nation will engage students with fun and interactive detective-themed games, puzzles, and challenges. These activities are designed to make breakfast time exciting and educational.
  • Special Menus: Cafeterias will feature special breakfast menus that align with the detective theme, offering a variety of healthy and delicious options to kickstart the day.
