Lucia Fraile, the 3rd-grade dual language immersion teacher at Liberty Elementary (Fayette County), is one of three finalists for the 2021 Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Education Office of Spain to the United States and Canada.

To participate in the contest, Fraile organized a virtual intercultural event with students at Liberty and their peers from Sevilla, Spain. The event included more than 200 students interacting and conversing in English and Spanish and sharing their talents and hobbies.
“One of the most important opportunities dual language learning opens to students is the access to experience and appreciate diverse cultures,” Fraile said.
Fraile has 10 years of dual language experience, including stints in Sevilla, Spain, and in London, England.

It has been an honor and privilege to work with Lucia. She is a very special person with a love for teaching. Her passion for Immersion is contagious. In the few short years Lucia has been at Liberty, she has become a leader and advanced our program to the finalist stage for Spanish Immersion School of the Year. She has worked tirelessly to make sure she leaves Kentucky, and Liberty Elementary a better place. Her ability and willingness to work with our Dual Language students and our traditional students made her an even more valuable member on our staff. The impact and impression she has made on children, families AND the staff of Liberty Elementary will live on. I am forever indebted to her.
Lucia’s laugh, sense of humor and her deep commitment to the teaching profession will be impossible to replace when she returns to Spain.
