About 200 Kentucky Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members and advisers joined more than 8,700 other attendees at the largest annual FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., in July.
A total of 95 Kentucky students participated in 30 family and consumer sciences related competitive events, including STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events. STAR events are competitive events in which members are recognized for their proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation by developing real-world skills. They received 40 gold, 42 silver and 13 bronze medals. In order to compete at the national level they had to first compete at the district, regional and state levels.
Chapter advisers Jo Million of John Hardin High School (Hardin County) and Ahren Wagner of Highlands High School (Fort Thomas Independent) were recognized as Master Advisers. The Master Adviser program recognizes advisers who have been successful in leading an FCCLA chapter for at least three years, continuously promote FCCLA and family and consumer science education, operate an integrated chapter with a balanced program of work, facilitate youth-centered activities and continue to integrate new ideas.
Kentucky FCCLA graduating member Jaclyn Little of Boyle County High School received the Marriott Hospitality Scholarship. The $3,000 scholarship is given to a FCCLA member who is majoring in hospitality. McCracken County High School received the $1,000 High School Award and received third place in the PSA Contest for their “Safe Rides Save Lives” video.
