Preparations are underway for the 2020 U.S. Census, and the U.S. Census Bureau is providing free resources to schools through its Statistics in Schools (SIS) program (see video).
Based on relevant education standards, the SIS activities – which are designed to supplement or guide, not replace, existing curricula – help develop the foundational knowledge and skills students should have at certain levels to help promote statistical literacy among students. By using the program in the classroom, educators also can help ensure that all of Kentucky’s students and the members of their households are counted in the 2020 Census and that their communities – and schools – receive their fair share of state and federal funding. Annually, more than $675 billion is spent on education, transportation and healthcare based on census data.
To learn more about the program, log on to the Census Bureau’s Statistics in the Schools website, which includes activities, resources and standards that can be addressed with this instruction.
