The Greenup County school district, led by second-year Superintendent Sherry Horsley, is focused on college- and career-readiness for every student. The district’s strategic plan, approved in 2015, is the road map to student success. Goals and objectives outlined under each of the six foundational elements for academic success are the basis for progress and performance. The district’s vision is simple – the gold standard in education, the foundation of our community.
Greenup County is committed to a culture of excellence and that culture begins with its youngest students. The district has expanded early childhood education options by offering universal preschool services to every 4-year-old in the district and now serves more than 130 4-year-olds. Greenup County is excited about the potential for continuing to improve student achievement by providing students with an early start for success.
This year also marked the first community “Read Across the Globe” event through the district’s new First Book program. This community-wide initiative provided books for every student in preschool through 2nd grade. The books were brought to life in the classrooms by guest readers. Greenup County also is continually looking to recognize the talents and achievements of students. Three areas of recognition added this school year include the Superintendent’s Scholars Program, Presidential Volunteer Service Award and Work Ethic Seal.
Professional learning continues to be a cornerstone of highly effective teaching. The district is in the second year of its innovative Operation TechSpert project. Teachers who participate receive professional learning opportunities to effectively infuse technology into daily curriculum. TechSperts attend monthly sessions, led by the district technology resource teacher, and upon completion of requirements of the initiative receive iPads to use in the classrooms.
Greenup County is excited about creating the foundation of excellence for students, staff and the community, and is committed to the vision of creating the gold standard in education.
