Art teacher Dorothea Broughton teaches the students at Kit Carson Elementary School (Madison County) quilling, an art form she was taught as a child. Quilling is the art of paper twirling.
Broughton said she learned how to do wood quilling when she was 6 years old. She said it is a popular art form in Scandinavia, which is her heritage.
“I just show them some basic shapes and they go wild,” she said.
All of her classes in 1st through 5th grades learn how to do quilling. On a recent visit, students combined the twirled pieces of paper to make shapes into ornaments. Some made snowflakes, sleighs and even Disney characters. Each student made two ornaments, one to take home and one for the tree at school (which they will take home before break).
