The Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) and the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) are hosting the Kentucky Braille Challenge on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for students in grades K-12 who read and/or write Braille. This is the first time this event has been held in Kentucky.  Thirty-three students from across the state will participate in the unique competition that will take place at KSB, located at 1867 Frankfort Ave., and at APH, located next door to the school at 1839 Frankfort Ave., in Louisville.

This Kentucky event is a part of the Braille Challenge program of the Braille Institute. Regional competitions hosted by schools for the blind and agencies that serve blind and visually-impaired children are taking place throughout the U.S and Canada. It is the only national Braille literacy competition of its kind in the country and is specifically designed to challenge and reward students who are blind for their study of Braille.

Competitions include Braille speed and accuracy, reading speed and comprehension, spelling, proofreading and interpreting tactile graphics/chart and graph reading. The top competitors from all regional events will be invited to participate in the national Braille Challenge in Los Angeles on June 24-25.
