The new KDE Science Assessment System, based on the defined learning expectations included in Kentucky’s Academic Standards for Science, is comprised of three interrelated components: Classroom Embedded Assessments, Through-Course Tasks and the State Summative Assessment. These components of the system occur on different schedules, and all focus on the advancement of teaching and learning throughout the school year.

In order to provide common messaging related to the Science Assessment System, KDE has scheduled orientation sessions across the Commonwealth. Each of the sessions is comprised of a half day orientation for administrators and a full day of learning for teachers.

KDE recommends one or two administrators from every district attend one of the half-day sessions. It is also recommended that districts send at least one elementary, one middle and one high school teacher to one of the full-day sessions. Teachers who would best serve districts are those who are deeply engaged with the implementation of the science standards and have had prior experiences through involvement in the Science Leadership Networks. As science teacher leaders, they can assist with the dissemination of information in their area.
